I hope your Good Friday is BLOOMIN’! I am searchin’ out as many flowers and blooms as I can find. Doesn’t it feel amazing when winter is finally over? Right now we’re in that space between everything being spring green and everything still being brown. There are green shoots coming out and the nurseries are shipping in their flowers but gardens are just not bloomin’ yet! Anticipation is killing me!
I was thinking this week about today’s flat lay and was coming up with a big fat goose egg! Earlier this week we had those spring winds that sweep in outta no where and turn everything upside down. I happened to have the back door open when one of those blew through… literally. Papers went flying, paint tubes learned how to sail, art work started bouncing off the walls, *more so than normal*. It was wild. I have a monogram metal “M” on top of the kitchen cabinets and this lil typhoon style wind kicked it right off and onto the counter. It just happened to land on a vase of flowers on the counter and decided to do the tango with a bunch of carnations.
AND ta-da!!! Inspiration! Out of a messy, crazy, water spilled, flower disaster… a flat lay was born.
I kinda really love that “M”. For one it’s spots… ADORE spots… And of course it is the monogram of my last name. In case you haven’t noticed, my name is on the organic side. LOL! And hubs and I have the same initials. How cool is that?
The Bloomin’ Mess
What really struck me though, is outta this bloomin’ mess something was created. Pretty much like Spring. The Divine created “Spring” and basically told it… you’re gonna have to use intense force to get the winter season tucked back into bed! We don’t really think about it much. It’s like the entire earth gives birth at once… well… on this side of the hemisphere right now. And if you’ve ever given birth-YEAH! You know the intense force that is!
Creativity can happen the same way. An idea or inspiration sneaks up on you. You ponder it a bit. Maybe try to talk yourself out of it. Then BAM! You’re in the middle of rippin out a wall! Hubs walks in in bewilderment, shakes his head and grabs a crow bar to help… ~Oh, wait, maybe that’s just me. But you get the idea!
When creativity strikes just go with it. Seriously. It’s a gift of force from the Divine. It’s one of the most powerful experiences you will EVER have. Even if it makes a huge mess, a crazy disaster can bring the most beautiful creations!
Okay! Your turn! Show me your flat lay using #flatlayfridayskm and be sure to tag me @sandykayemoss on IG! I totally hope you connect with me over on Instagram!
This is a good day to share a flat lay! Especially one full of “WanderLust”!
Today I’m featuring a flat lay from an incredible friend of mine. This gal is all grit with a side of bright red lipstick. Seriously. She’s looking at a future for herself with wide-eyed wonder and a big ole grateful heart.
Bits and Bobs
So yesterday we got together for a couple hours to play in the world of flat lay. Too much fun Ya’ll! She brought some meaningful bits and bobs with her that seemed to really resonate in the soul. We started by chatting about the life she is in right now. Everything that walked in the door with her. She planted her feet squarely in her present reality… I’m just gonna say.. It takes some raw honesty to do this and she was totally up for it! She jotted these thoughts down and then we moved on.
We went through the next steps in the process all the while chatting and sharing silly stories. She gathered some pieces and began curating her flat lay. Gal is super creative BTW! As she began the editing phase she kept looking at her chosen objects with a bit of curious confusion. YES! THIS is what “Designing Your Life” with a flat lay is all about!
It is so exciting to witness someone work through this process and begin uncovering their hearts desires. It happens so subtly … your heart really sneaks up on you! Just blows me away that I got to share this with my awesome friend!
With the curating and editing of the piece finished, the only thing left was to snap the pics and pop them in the photo editor. I adore how this flat lay really embodies the heart and future of my friend. Now for privacy sake I’m not gonna reveal what she discovered. *Cuz That would just NOT be cool ya’ll!! I’m pretty certain you will be hearing from this powerhouse of a gal in the future!
I have big ole heart hugs for my friend and I know she just began a design for her life that is going to be one adventure after another!
Have you created your flay lay yet? I’m pretty sure it will give you a peek at a heart you had no idea was inside of you!
I can’t wait to see your flat lay! You can find me here on IG and be sure you use the #flatlayfridayskm so I can see your flat lay and hear your amazing story!

Time. The one thing in the universe we cannot master, manipulate or create. Ok, well, I’m sure there’s other stuff that falls into those categories. When it comes to living your life by design you gotta acknowledge the things you have some amount of control over. Yep, you can certainly manage your time. You can feel like you can create some extra time maybe by multi taking… * never a good idea… just sayin* And to some degree you can trick yourself into thinking your the master of your days. Ya know, by outsourcing, uber scheduling, and delegating.
Basically. You have been given a certain amount of time to play on this planet. That’s it. You can’t outsource it, schedule it or delegate. Bartering is usually not a great idea either.
Timing a Flat Lay
What in the sam hill does this have to do with that Flat Lay? Well. Those flowers. They’re gonna last a week at most. I’m gonna enjoy every minute of it too. The butterfly mini art. It’s gonna be around a lot longer. Not forever though. That’s a Painted Lady by the way. The lifespan of that lil critter? 2 weeks. That’s it. During which time it needs to mature, procreate and lay some eggs. Along with find some food.
Those colorful circle things? Art supplies. pretty cool ones at that. It’s a portion of a set of “Perfect Pearls”. It’s powder. Super fine pigmented powder. You can mix it with watercolors or water, tons of fun ways to use them. Except. I mentioned powder right? One sneeze. Yep. It is blown away. Literally. Gone. Vanished and no way to get it back.
My mother in law, that gal was a mess. As she grew older you NEVER knew what she was going to say. SERIOUSLY. Like… I won’t even try to repeat some of her antics. She had been the epitome of quiet, dignified, restrained. NEVER a colorful word from her. Until she had a stroke. On man! She let loose then! Too funny. Well. That bee? It was hers. She collected little pins/brooches that were critters of one sort or another. She’s passed on now. The bees? They’re in trouble with time too, it seems.
That cute little butterfly book hubs picked up in an antique store years ago.. It was given out by Chase and Sanborn Tea Importers. The copyright on this little book is 1900. The company, like so many others was bought out by a larger one. Once again. Time plays it’s hand, changing the face and destiny of a company.
Keeping Time vs Telling Time
The watch. It’s pretty obvious. It’s a time keeper. But not really. It’s a time teller. It belonged to another relative of mine, by marriage. A no nonsense get it done woman. We didn’t always see eye to eye. For many years we didn’t agree on anything and pretty much had a difficult relationship. As time passed, we became dear to each other. I do miss her so.
The last piece. Just a pretty journal type book. I can’t stop time but I can remind myself of the precious gift it is. Time is vital to designing your life. When you run out of time, you run out of life to design. You can let it slip quickly through your hands and just run on default or you can indulge in gratitude for the time you have right now.
Your life is now. Not tomorrow. Not last year. Design your life right now. Flat Lay your time and see what it looks like.
I would love to see your time… Flat Lay. Tag me @sandykayemoss and use the #flatlayfridayskm

Spring is here and I am more than ready! Winter was actually rather mild ’round southeast Ohio. Makes no difference to me though! I am all about warm weather… ok… HOT weather, I will just admit it! Give me 100 degrees and I’m comfortable!
Today was one of the first days we danced around 70 degrees and I am all sorts of happy. Of course, Flat Lay Friday had to be all about spring since the sun is out and the birds are singing! It reminds me of that scene in the Snow White movie when the birds are flitting around and she’s singing… Ummm… Don’t worry I will spare you the singing!
Spring Flat Lay
Now on to the Flat Lay! The magazine I used was one I picked up at Kroger back in early February. I could not resist those gorgeous flowers on the front! AND seriously!! The name of the magazine is FLOWER?! How do you not scoop that one up in the dead of winter! I hadn’t heard of this magazine before and I’m sure as we hang out here on the blog more you’ll realize I may have a slight addiction to magazines. Inside there are some unbelievably pretty layouts of flowers and a couple spreads on floral designers. I think I’ll try and track them down on Instagram for this Sundays “Sunday Insta-spiration” post. ~still working on that title, not sure I like it just yet. I am so open to suggestions on this one!
The ceramic “Hope” flower is one I picked up a couple years ago at a fun lil shop. Yep. Had to have it since it’s orange. It has one of those hangers you slide it on and stick in flower pot.
That adorable pinkish ribbon is one of a set a friend sent me. It’s muslin that she hand dyed and tore into these adorable ribbons! She was super sweet to send me a collection of colors. Just cannot bring myself to actually use them! I love how they look all wrapped up on their little spools!
A few years ago my awesome hubby made a trip to Japan. It was just two weeks after the Fukushima disaster but he that couldn’t keep him from visiting his dear friend and sensei. That man just has my heart. He managed to safely bring home two amazing hand blown glasses. The green glass in this flat lay is one of them. The sides are etched with images of bamboo and it is just stunning.
Art supplies. Another weakness of mine. The bright tubes that look like lipstick tubes are the coolest artsy toys ever! These are Gelatos. Just some amazing sticks of sunshine I was instantly smitten with! Super intense sticks of acid-free pigment which means- drag that color over a canvas or mixed media art journal and you have creamy, yummy heaven on a surface! Best part is these babies are practically mess free!
I plopped in a journal because, ya know, Spring is list making time! Cleaning lists, recipe lists, art making lists, project lists… The cute *Enjoy Today * card is from one of my gazillion scrap booking sets- that I sorta don’t ever use to scrap book!
A mini canvas I created last summer is hanging out. Just a simple vase with some flowers popped in. I think the canvas a 3×3? I found a wire flower from forever ago and a calming purple stone/rock thing…. with the word “Imagine”.
Umm… Why? You Ask?
Styling this Flat Lay *heehee makes me feel all OFFICIAL to say-styling* I began with the magazine and the color of the title. I knew I wanted to try to emphasize that Yellow in some way. After 4-5-15-30 attempts… and walking around the house looking for goodies, it finally came together. The funny part is, I didn’t really put any thought into the “why” of the grouping until it was already completed. As the pics were chosen and edited I began to see the story. Winter can be very long. Really not a ton of bright colors or light here in winter. The sky is overcast, grey most of the time.
This story unfolded right in front of me. Imagine the flowers. Enjoy today.
So much more than just objects on a background, this Spring inspired Flat Lay walked me into a real truth. No matter where we are in the journey of designing our lives… We have the ability to imagine of the very best and brightest. And no matter what. Enjoy Today.

So I need to start here. If you have spent any time at all on the internet or if you have an Instagram account you have prob seen a photography phenom called a “Flat Lay”. If you are thinking … yeah, she’s lost it… I won’t argue with you on that, BUT. A Flat Lay is a style of photography where the picture is snapped from directly above the object. AND! It’s not just ONE object. It’s a collection of objects arranged in a cool, fun, charming, engaging manner that tell a story. Flat Lay photographs generally rely on one color or a main color within the frame and have objects of varying size.
I know. Now your thinking… “Why in the world is she telling me all this mumbo jumbo? I thought this blog was about finding some kinda design for life!” You didn’t know I could read minds did ya? Okay, so stick with me here. This whole ‘living your life by design’ thing? It sits beautifully right next to Flay Lay photography. What better way to start designing your life than by curating little worlds that make you happy? Little worlds that help you discover a path, no matter how overgrown, that leads you to – well, YOU.
A Few Pretty Things
There is an art within you that wants to get out. It is WHO you were created to be. We are really good at pushing this “created being” way, way down… far below what anyone can reach. Including us. Picking up a paint brush can be incredibly intimidating. Sculpture. Same thing. Playing an instrument in front of others… Don’t even want to go there! BUT! What if… by finding a few things that tempt your little heart… a color that sings to your soul… a texture that begs to be touched… You allow yourself to quietly indulge your creative spirit. No judgment. No pressure. A few pretty things. Snap a picture. Breathe.
That’s it. That’s the beginning of #flatlayfriday. I want to share with you just how simple creativity can be. This little exercise in creativity will be incredibly fulfilling. Every Friday I will post a pic of a Flat Lay. I will share what inspired these particular objects and talk a smidge about the reason they are positioned where they are.
Indulge in Some Prettiness
I want this for you. I want you to indulge in some prettiness! I want you to bump into how amazing and creative you actually are! And I want you to see how super simple and awesomesauce fun this is. A Flat Lay can be as simple as flowers lying on a table with a book and pen or an entire spread of yummy food. Meet me here every Friday for a Flat Lay and some juicy creative color play. You will want to hop over here to follow me on Instagram and then share your own #flatlayfridayskm pic! Just post your Flat Lay to your Instagram and use the #flatlayfridayskm to share!
